Week 1 of college football was highly entertaining if you like scoring and blowouts. The only ranked team to lose was Oregon and a ranked team had to lose in that game because the opponent was a ranked Auburn squad.
At the top of the rankings, Clemson crushed, Bama rolled, Georgia stomped, and so on and so on. But the gambling side of it was fun as were also several games that came down to the wire against the number for the side and total.
A few bad beats included Ole Miss +4, Oregon +4 and NW +7.
Let’s take a look at this week’s Free Pick:
Western Michigan at No. 20 Michigan State
Michigan State -16 | Total 46.5
I’m going back to the well here because I don’t think Western Michigan is going to score much at all on Sparty. The Michigan State defense is one of the best in the country and last week they sacked the quarterback six times and had 13 tackles for a loss in their win over Tulsa.
However, the Michigan State offense did not look improved. The 28-7 win wasn’t pretty and should have been a much larger margin of victory. MSU QB Brian Lewerke only threw for 192 yards and missed open receivers all night. I think he will do much better in this game.
Western Michigan hasn’t won in East Lansing for 100 years. That’s a real stat. I don’t think this is the team to be able to do even though they did win their first game in very impressive fashion over Monmouth. Michigan State is going to blitz the heck out of QB John Wassnik who threw for 5 touchdowns last week. Watch out for corner Shakur Brown who had 2 sacks against Tulsa.
The Spartans have their first Power 5 game next week against Arizona State which could be a look ahead but in order to compete with Arizona St next week they will have to generate offense – and that offense will be at the expense of Western Michigan this week. The big difference will be that Western Michigan won’t score more than 10 points here.
