Charlatan closed pool four of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager the slightest of individual betting favorites over Tiz the Law with both colts standing at 5-1.
The field, or “all other 3-year-olds,” was made the overall 3-1 favorite.
A total of $144,335 was bet into the future wager win pool, which closed at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, with Charlatan receiving $17,364 in win wagers and Tiz the Law $17,275. The co- second choices at 9-1 were Nadal and Maxfield, while Authentic was next at 10-1.
There was an additional $69,315 handled in this weekend’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager exacta pool.
Pool four was originally slated to be the final Kentucky Derby Future Wager of the season. However, with this year’s Kentucky Derby pushed back from the first Saturday in May to Sept. 5 due to coronavirus, Churchill Downs plans to offer additional pools this summer.
Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law, who improved to 4-for-5 in last weekend’s Florida Derby (G1), is expected to be given a break and point for a summer campaign. Charlatan, who is perfect in two starts for trainer Bob Baffert, could resurface in either this weekend’s Oaklawn Stakes at Oaklawn Park or the Santa Anita Derby (G1), which has been postponed with a date yet to be determined.
After this weekend’s pool closed, Churchill Downs offered this update of additional Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools, noting they will be determined in “coming weeks.
“Churchill Downs officials have been working with other prominent partner tracks to add additional “Road to the Kentucky Derby” races and determine the various paths to the Kentucky Derby starting gate that enable the horses in the best form to compete. An updated schedule of races will be announced in the coming weeks as separate discussions with state and local governments and all appropriate parties to determine the most suitable time to conduct those races continue.”
