The New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars meet Monday in week 2 NFL preseason action at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Jacksonville Jaguars look for a bounce back showing after losing to the Browns. The New Orleans Saints look for a win after losing their opener to the Ravens.
The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t show up until the fourth quarter of their opening game. In the losing effort, the Jaguars produced 302 total yards and allowed 360 total yards. C.J. Beathard led Jacksonville with 102 passing yards and one touchdown while Trevor Lawrence and Jake Luton combined for 124 passing yards and one touchdown. Dare Ogunbowale led the Jaguars with 24 rushing yards on eight carries while Josh Hammond and Tavon Austin combined for 107 receiving yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Chris Claybrooks led the Jaguars with five tackles, Aaron Patrick had one sack and Sidney Jones IV had one pass deflection. The Jaguars were held scoreless in their first three quarters and averaged just 3.1 yards per carry. The good news is Lawrence looked respectable in his limited reps, completing six of his nine passes and averaging nearly eight yards per pass.
The New Orleans Saints lost a back and forth contest and were shutout in three of their four quarters. In the losing effort, the Saints produced 366 total yards and allowed 308 total yards. Ian Book led New Orleans with 126 passing yards and one interception while Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill combined for 177 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Tony Jones Jr. led the Saints with 82 rushing yards and one touchdown while Juwan Johnson and Marquez Callaway combined for 132 receiving yards. Defensively, Kaden Elliss led the Saints with eight tackles, Eric Burrell had one sack and Bryce Thompson had one interception. The Saints offense couldn’t finish drives, as all three of their quarterbacks had an interception and they turned the ball over six times overall. Needless to say, you should expect a much cleaner and disciplined performance from the Saints this time around.
The Jaguars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games on field turf and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Monday games. The Saints are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games as a favorite and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The under is 6-1 in Jaguars last 7 Monday games. The under is 8-3 in Saints last 11 games overall. The Jaguars are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
The Saints should be favored, as they’re the better team on paper and you should expect a more disciplined performance after so many turnovers in their first exhibition. However, I have a thing with chalk in preseason games and I’m not thrilled about laying anything more than three points. Once we start throwing out hooks or getting in the four points or above range, I usually start leaning toward the underdog.
Give me the Jaguars (+).
